NEW CAMERA FILTER RESTORES COLOR SATURATION WHEN ND FILTERS ARE EMPLOYED.

IT'S PARTICULARLY HELPFUL WITH RED ONE AND SIMILAR CAMERAS.

Rosco's new TruColor IR camera filter restores proper color saturation in situations where the use of heavy neutral density filter washes out color balance in a composition.

It is commonplace for a camera operator to use Neutral Density camera filters in the course of composing and balancing a shot. But when used with some digital video camera's these ND filters can adversely desaturate the color balance of the shot. Inherently sensitive to infrared light, the digital sensors in the camera can become overwhelmed by the imbalance between the visible light which has been attenuated by the ND filter and the infrared light which is unaffected by the ND. The Rosco TruColor IR filter balances the visible and infrared light allowing the camera sensors to render proper color saturation and restores the color fidelity in the finished composition.

This filter was developed with the assistance of Michael Morlan of Austin Film Tools. In fact, its development is an interesting R&D story. Morlan, a Austin Texas based cinematographer familiar with Rosco, contacted us for assistance solving a strange problem that was affecting his work with a Red One camera, a very popular new HD video camera. Some quick research on the camera forums made it clear that Mike's problem was not unique. With his help, Rosco's optical engineers developed and tested several filter formulations before settling on the best coating solution, now available as the TruColor IR Camera Filter.

A prototype of the TruColor IR Camera filter was shown to a select group of cameramen and cinematographers at NAB and received very positive feedback. That initial exposure plus the community enthusiasm demonstrated in the online Red-User forums has already generated overwhelming demand for this product.

Michael Morlan Bio:

Michael Morlan is director of photography in Austin, Texas. He has been actively involved in industrial, commercial, and narrative production since 1988 when he got his start as a 3D animator for a large architectural firm in Houston and quickly took on the roles of editor, director, and producer.

After a couple years as a freelance broadcast graphics animator, Michael moved to Austin in 1995 to work as a writer, director, and animator of 3D animated films for Origin Systems, a computer game developer. During the following ten years, Michael started shooting live short form projects, building his experience and reel. In early 2006, with the demise of yet another game development company, Michael jumped ship to be a freelance shooter full time.

As a member of the Austin Film Society's Speaker's Bureau, Michael conducts seminars on lighting for those new to the craft, as well as writes an occasional article on various aspects of film and video production.
