USES AND EFFECTIVENESS:
Roscoflamex is not intended to be used in place of other Roscoflamex products.
Where possible, always treat the substrate material using the appropriate
Roscoflamex product. However, when this is not possible, Roscoflamex P50 is
used to create a fire retardant coating. This coating does not alter the
flammability of the material being painted but rather creates a barrier that
slows the spread of fire along the substrate.
When painting muslin and canvas backdrops, use Roscoflamex P50 to render the
scenic paint fire retardant. But Roscoflamex should still be used to treat the
fabric itself. When painting murals on plasterboard walls, Roscoflamex P50
provides a fire retardant paint coating that will meet most local and federal
fire codes. Mix Roscoflamex P50 with Rosco Clear Acrylic Glaze when a fire
retardant sealer is required.
Roscoflamex products work by releasing non-combustible gases which starve a fire
of oxygen. However, a fire retardant paint film is not an effective fire
barrier on highly combustible materials such as foams and plastics. For
polystyrene foams Rosco Foamcoat is an excellent protective, fire-retardant
coating.
Always select the correct flame retardant for your project. When treating
textiles or papers, use Roscoflamex C26 or S33. For raw wood and cellulosic
products use Roscoflamex W40. Coat polystyrene foam with Rosco Foamcoat.
How to apply Roscoflamex P50
Roscoflamex P50, when mixed with Roscopaint in accordance with the directions on
the next page, creates an effective fire retardant barrier, designed to slow
the spread of flame along the substrate being painted. This is a distinction
from other Roscoflamex products whose effectiveness lies in treating the
substrate. Whereas those products make the material treated self-extinguishing,
P50 is used to create a barrier layer between the source of fire and the base
material, regardless of whether this material is fire retardant or not.
DILUTION AND MIXING:
Add one 12 oz. jar of Roscoflamex P50 directly to one gallon of Roscopaint.
Always test a small mixture before adding P50 to a full gallon of paint. If any
clumping occurs, add 4 oz. of water to the Roscoflamex P50 and then add this
mixture to the Roscopaint.
When using Rosco Supersaturated paint add one 12 oz. jar to two quarts of
undiluted Supersaturated and then dilute this mixture at least 1:1 with water.
Twelve ounces of Roscoflamex P50 may not entirely fit into one full gallon of
Roscopaint. It may be necessary to mix in a larger bucket. Mix thoroughly
before using.
Paint may be diluted with water after being treated with Roscoflamex P50, but
the dry paint film must be no less than 4 mil in thickness. The effectiveness
of a fire retardant barrier is dependent on both the fire retardant additive
and the thickness of the coating.
Apply treated paint by brush, roller or sprayer. Regardless of the method of
application, it is vital that a complete paint film is formed and that the dry
film thickness of the finished coating is not less than 4 mil. Paint films that
are incomplete, or are too thin, will not provide a barrier against the spread
of fire.
STORAGE:
Store Roscoflamex P50 only in non-metallic containers. When metal sprayers are
used, they should be thoroughly cleaned immediately after use, including
nozzles and accessories. Avoid use of metal buckets or paint containers when
possible.
COVERAGE:
Coverage will vary with coverage of the paint being used. Approximately 300 sq.
ft. per gallon of paint.
WARNING: Use only with adequate ventilation. Do not take internally. Do notstore in extreme heat or allow to come in contact with strong acids. Do nottransfer contents to another container. Do not store in metal containers . Washhands after use. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
P50 Quick Tips
-
These days, many companies rent scenery to reduce their production costs. When
rented scenery arrives, often the fire retardance of a set piece is unknown. By
using P50 in Rosco Clear Acrylic Glaze, you can provide a fire retardant
barrier without altering the appearance of the finished paint treatment.
-
For years, backpainting hard scenery has been an accepted means of treating
flats and platforms for fire retardance. By adding P50 to the backpaint, you
provide an additional level of protection that is accepted by most local and
state Fire Marshals.
-
Do not add to metallic paints as tarnishing will occur.
When applied at 200 sq. ft. per gallon of undiluted Roscopaint, Roscoflamex P50
provides a CLASS A flame spread rating on 5/8" gypsum wallboard. Tested in
accordance with ASTME84, at ETLTesting Laboratories, Cortland, NY.
